Geoff’s Sandals

I’ve been wearing Birkenstock sandals (Arizonas) for about 7-8 years. It’s kinda something I’m known for. People often wonder if I wear anything BUT Birkenstock sandals. I have a pair of black Converse All-Stars and black, steel-toed Doc Marten boots, but for most of the time, the sandals are it. A lot of folks see Birkenstocks as “evidence” of something (medical professional, hippy liberal, lesbian, “douchebag”), but I wear them for 3 simple reasons: they’re comfortable, they slip on-and-off quick & easy, and they keep my feet warm but still allow some airing out. Of course, when it’s cold out, people question my decision to wear sandals. I only wear shoes (usually boots) when damp weather (like rain or snow) demands it. I’ll freely admit, open-toed sandals don’t protect well against sharp objects or heavy falling objects, hot liquids, or annoying pebbles/leaves/twigs, but the freedom and comfort they allow more than make up for it (usually). If you wanna lump me in with anyone for wearing Birkenstocks, make it Lakers coach Phil Jackson, model/fashion designer Heidi Klum and Family Guy’s Death. For any more reason why I should wear sandals, see NOFX’s 1994 song, “Jeff Wears Birkenstocks” (early punk bashing a hippie stereotype; that’s not the pot calling the kettle black;)

First definition of “sandal” in Merriam-Webster says, “a shoe consisting of a sole strapped to the foot.”
