How many pairs of shoes do you own?

How many would you consider “a lot”? For a man? For a woman?

I know the stereotype is that women hoard shoes.

Does a man owning a lot of shoes seem “un-manly”?

For the record, I own:
1 pair black opera slippers, for wearing with my tuxedo and my midnight blue serge double-breasted
1 pair hand-made black wingtips
1 pair Cordovan wingtips
1. pair hand-made black cap toe Oxfords
2 pairs New Balance running shoes
1 pair New Balance walking shoes in black leather, dressy enough for slacks
1 pair Birkenstock sandals in chocolate brown
1 pair Propet sandals in navy
1 pair navy nubuck bedroom slippers
1 pair navy canvas upper boat shoes

10 pairs

I’d probably own more, but I wear 14 DDDD (actually 13 DDDDDD is a better fit but harder to find) so I often need to get shoes hand made and they’re hard to find.
Good catch, Aussie!
Re: disposable income. My oldest shoes are nine years old and my newest (new pair of canvas boat shoes) are a year old (canvas shoes wear out sooner). I buy sturdy shoes, never wear them two days in a row, and take good care of them. That’s cheaper in the long run.

I have too many to count, and their lying all over the place. I usually think its strange if a man only has one or two. You should have at least a few to trade off on.

  2. I'm Super Sexiness!!! says:

    Hmmmmm

    I have:

    trainers
    Best
    everyday
    dossing around

    that’s it

    4 pairs – yay

  3. Char says:

A dozen. A couple are worn out and I should toss them.
    C. :) !!

  4. vintner says:

I have four. My husband has seven.

I think we both have fewer shoes than the average person.

I think the reason that women have a reputation for hoarding shoes is that women’s shoes are expected to “go” with whatever they’re wearing. As a result, many of us own LOTS of them just in case. There isn’t the same expectation for men.

  5. lady luck says:

That’s a good shoe wardrobe. Something of everything for every occasion.

I have a shoe fetish so I own more shoes than cloths. 9 pairs of fetish stripper shoes, and a few baskets full, racks full, and lines of flats, heals, gym and everything else you can think of. All different styles. Mostly black or black and red.

My feet are small so I can fit kids sizes (4 kids, 6 adult) so I even own a pair of light up ones. :D

  6. wihntr says:

    4
    House slippers
    Doc marten boots
    hunting boots
wing tips for my suit ( i hate these shoes)

  7. Jaco says:

8 pairs. All do something differently cept for 2 pairs.

  8. Erin M says:

probably about 10…but i live in texas by a lake so i probably have 15 or 20 flipflops

  9. guaglione1972 says:

    I got you beat, Bro–

    14.

    3 pairs of driving shoes
    1 pair of boat shoes
    2 pairs brown ankle boots
1 pair of black monk strap
    1 pair of work boots
    1 pair of cowboy boots
1 pair of brown suede loafers
    2 pairs of leather sandals
    1 pair of running shoes
    1 pair of cross-trainers

  10. Ember Halo says:

    four.
1 pair Dr. Scholes (sp?) black, with gel soles
1 pair beat up black Sketcher cross trainers
1 pair brown leather flip-flop style sandals
    1 pair black leather sandals

i hate shoe shopping, and all but the Dr. Scholes I’ve had for several years.

i’d say you are bordering on having a lot of shoes. i don’t make distinctions between the genders..

  11. nerdyxpunk says:

6 pairs of Vans Slip-Ons (argyle, plaid, solid, checkered, designed, suede, canvas, special vegan, among others)
1 pair of Air Force 1’s
    2 pair of Generic Nike’s
4 pairs of dress/interview shoes (couple of different colors)
    2 pair of Vans Classics

= 15 pairs. I love my slip-ons no matter how unmanly they seem. I only ever bought Nike’s for sports and going to the gym

  12. Fereshte says:

Oooh, wingtips and Oxfords look so good on a man! I don’t think its un-manly for a man to have many pairs of shoes– it just means he wants to look good and is fashion conscious. This isn’t a “woman only” interest. If you want to have many pairs of shoes, I think that’s a good thing. My man has two pairs of shoes and it drives me crazy.
I, on the other hands, have so many shoes, they no long fit into my closet. I make outfits to revolve around my shoes. I can’t help it, I am a shoe fiend. So I understand the desire to have many shoes.

  13. PG says:

    2 brown dress shoes
    1 black dress shoes
    X-country ski boots
    day hikers
    cleats
    2 running shoes
    2 sandals
    work boots
    2 rubber boots (work)
    2 winter boots

15 pairs and I use them all

  14. kub2 semantics says:

ahh man shoes are my weakness…

3 different kinds of Mary Jane’s
4 pairs of wedges – love wedges
2 pairs of stilettos (one black, one brown)
6 pairs of flats – love me flats too
    3 pairs kitten heel pumps
gawd like a million pairs of sandals
    4 pairs of knee highs
    2 pairs pumas
1.5 pairs of chucks (dog got the other black one)
    1 pair etnies
    1 pair of tennies

  15. [Rei] says:

Hmm..I think I’d consider it a lot when they hit 20. It’d kind of depend on the shoe collection to be honest though. (i.e., someone that has 15 crosstrainers is excessive, while someone that has 15 different types of shoes isn’t).

    Personally, I have 12 pairs.
    2 Doc Marten boots
    2 Onmyodo dress shoes
    2 Swear Alternative platform boots
    2 pairs slippers
    1 pair Saucony Jazz runners
    1 pair Converse basketball shoes
    1 pair Birkenstock sandals
    1 pair snow boots

I don’t find my collection excessive. They all have their purpose & I’m not urged to buy more needlessly. People that collect shoes like that are quite creepy to me.

  16. Babygirl S says:

Right now,I think I own about 10 pair. I had about 25 or more but no longer wear them (my teen kidnapped them……..lol).

  17. Bingbing says:

I own about 70 pairs of shoes. I would have more but I gave some away and threw away some that were old and worn.

1 pair of knee-high stiletto dominatrix boots, several pairs of strappy sandals, a few pairs of espadrilles, various styles of high heels (strappy, peep-toe, basic pump, kitten heel, maryjane, etc.), 3 pairs of tennis shoes (different colors), sling-back sneakers, mary-jane sneakers, 2 pairs of running shoes of different style and color, 10 pairs of high-heeled boots (mid-calf, knee-high) of different styles and colors, and so on and so on.

I’m not in a position to tell someone they have too many pairs of shoes. For me, it’s an obsession…a fetish. And I am not ashamed! ;) Living up to the shoe fetish stereotype…guilty as charged!

For men, having a shoe for every occasion is nice. Having a shoe that goes with what you have in your wardrobe is nice. Depends on ones fashion sense and style. Having a shoe to match/compliment the outfit ties it all together very nicely. Depends on the guy really and what they do for a living and where they go to hang out/what hobbies they have.

  18. Aussie Bloke says:

Wow – that’s some big feet you have!

For the record, I also have ten pairs in all:
one pair of tan saddle shoes
one pair of classic black oxfords
one pair of Australian army boots (waterproof to the top, so they’re good for serious hiking and riding motorcycles)
one pair of hiking sneakers (for good weather)
one pair of good white sneakers
one pair of good black sneakers
one pair of crappy sneakers (for gardening, etc.)
    one pair of winter boots
    one pair of slippers
    one pair of swim sandals

I don’t see anything un-manly about it. It’s simply having the right equipment to suit each situation – just like having the right tools in the garage.

PS: maybe you should count again – you have listed 11 pairs of shoes in 10 styles.

  19. Rio Madeira says:

    1 pair of black walking shoes;
    2 pairs of black boots;
    1 pair of brown boots;
    1 pair of wedge sandals;
    1 pair of black heeled sandals;
    1 pair of navy slippers.

That’s it? Seriously? I have even less shoes than you?

  20. G-gal says:

4, it means I don’t have disposable income.

  21. Marguerite says:

I haven’t the foggiest idea. But, I’m not tripping over any, so it must be a reasonable amount.

  22. itsmynaturekc says:

I despise shoes. Probably because I used to manage a shoe department. I despise retail.

Anyway … hmm. Work shoes, sneakers, crosstrainers, flipflops, shower shoes and slippers. And a pair of heels somewhere that I never wear.

He has work shoes, sneakers, running shoes, shower shoes, and slippers. Hmm again. I need to go flipflop shopping! :-D

  23. philitree says:

Only five. In fact, my hubby has more shoes than me. He currently has eleven.

  24. Trixie says:

I technically have a lot of shoes, but if I can help it I only wear my favorite pair.

    I own and wear –
    -My super-awesome black sketchers
-My Army boots (because I have to)
-New Balance running shoes (because the others aren’t good for running in)
    - A pair of non-descript brown shoes (for brown outfits)
    - A pair of black pumps (because the sketchers don’t look good with a skirt)
    - Brown high heeled sandal looking type shoes (because not all skirts look good with black pumps)
    - Black, brown, and turquoise flip-flops that I’ll probably lose (hence why I have three pairs of them)

I own a bin full of other shoes, mostly the high heeled variety, that I have never worn, or have only worn once. Or used to wear, but don’t have the heart to get rid of.

    These include –
-Red, chunky high heeled shoes (worn twice)
    - High heeled shoes with cherries on them (worn once)
    - High heeled Mary-Jane style shoes (from when I used to go clubbing)
    - Knee high combat-style boots with superfluous zippers (see, I went through this phase…)
    - White go-go boots (halloween)
    - Three pairs of old running shoes
    - One black strappy shoe. I have no idea where the other is.
    - This list is FAR from complete!

I LOVE shoes. The problem is, I don’t love WEARING shoes. I’d much rather go barefoot. Still, I can’t seem to resist buying those super cute shoes even if they don’t fit quite right and I have no outfit to wear them with!
