I’m 15, and I have flat feet. Should I get surgery to repair them?

Yeah I had flat feet since I was born, and it’s becoming painful to walk for 30-60 minutes. Also, I have custom orthotics that I wore for a year, and they didn’t help whatsoever. I heard that Birkenstock shoes help, should I buy those? Or should I get surgery? Because when I’m older, flat feet can cause back pain and arthritis.

    no don’t get surgery
go back to your doctor to get options for another treatment
surgery should only be used as an absolute last resort

It is amazing what modern science can do, but I have not heard of that type of surgery. Certainly talk to a specialist about your concerns. Birk’s are very comfortable shoes, they do not have an arch support in them. They maybe comfortable for you but they will not help “fix” your feet. Have you tried looking at webmd. com? It is a nice web site that we use at The University of Iowa often for patient education.

I could help you correct your flat feet and it would only involve you doing some exercises. If interested, email me k. sordo@gmail. com
