Soldier throwing animal off cliff on video? Serious answers only?

If we train our men in uniform to be killers and they are trained to such a high degree, is this as bad to Elite military fighters as it is to the birkenstock wearing left wing people?

I am not condoning this. I am looking for honest opinions from men that actually sacrifice their lives and family relationships to make sure that we all can sleep at night and know that no one is going to hurt us.
For the record U.S. Military personnel–Thank you for the answers and thank you for your sacrifices.
In no way whatsoever am I trying to further the spread of the video or bash anyone. I respect all of those men out there. Completely so please dont take this as a bash.
Blaster–I love the quote!

Alowishus–I am not loading the question as such. I am simply trying to get some honest opinions from people who have worn the uniform and served in such situations (war) I have not had the privilege to serve my country due to health conditions. I am about as pro military and USA as one can get.

It is just as disgusting as the liberal anti war types using this to bash the entire military.

Hey blaster, I love the Patton quote. One of my all time favorites

Before I judge any military personnel, I want documented and verified proof that the footage is real, legitimate and not faked by some terrorist or military hating group. period.

Its a bit too ironic that the Times Square recruiters office blew up after this whole incident. Rationalization all around by the “anti-violent” types, none of it is working.

I have heard of the video, but I haven’t seen it yet. Typically, cruelty to animals is a sign of deeper psychological issues. What can we expect when we train people to kill and deploy them for too long?

I served 8 years in the US Army special Operations Command. My wife gets super upset with me when I break stuff around the house when I’m angry, but she knows I never take it out on the living. However, I would have tossed him off the cliff after the dog. He’s heavier and might have broken the dogs fall.

I heard about this and I was like wow. How cold hearted can you be? but then I sat back and really thought about it. I know two people who have gone into the army to fight over in iraq and this doesn’t surprise me. They brainwash these people so bad, that they are messed up for the rest of their lives. People who have come home from wars end up beating their wives and are considered heros. What is that?! They have no cares anymore. Its like they’ve become robots. Killing an innnocent animal is terrible. Where I live, a couple of years ago, two boys were put in jail because they tormented and teased ALREADY unfortunate animals (animals who have lost legs, eyes, ears, whatnot) in our local petting zoo. When they were put in jail they got beat up so bad, one of the kids needed plastic surgery.

I think it begs the serious and legitimate question as to what caused the man to do such a thing.

Yes, it should be as big a deal to “Elite military fighters” even if for different reasons. Military training ought to create able and effective soldiers, not psychopaths. I would think that any American soldier should be interested in definitively dispelling the notion that his tossing the puppy off the cliff was brought about or even encouraged by his training.

By the way, if you’re really looking for honest opinions, you shouldn’t load up your questions so.

Edit: As a side thought, why is it that it’s only permissible to generalise positively? I mean, one soldier’s positive action or behaviour is allowed to reflect on the entire military, to glory the entire military. . . Why should one soldier’s negative actions or behaviour not reflect on and embarrass (if not indict) the entire military? Why do they wear uniforms, then?

Edit II: Yeah. . . You’ve only made it worse. . . What if someone who had served and holds unfavourable opinions of the military wanted to weigh in? Wouldn’t you say that your phrasing just might prejudice his/her response?

Edit III: Actually, Articled, I’ve heard more about how difficult it is to adopt dogs from Iraq than I have about the puppy toss, but that’s beside the point. I was merely pointing out in a general sense that the military can do no wrong in the eyes of far too many people. If a soldier does something heroic, it’s a credit to his uniform, the service, etc. as well it should be, but if he does something heinous, he and he alone is to blame and anyone who dares even suggest otherwise is automatically a traitorous “left-wing” madman. Again, I’m speaking generally here, and generally, you’re correct, media does tend to report more negative stories about the military than positive – but again, beside the point.

Edit IV: mikerr83, that is completely unfair. You are not better than other people, nor is your relationship. I may as well suggest that my bond with my wife is stronger than yours because we haven’t been separated by military deployments. Your comments are offensive (and a little defensive, if you ask me). As a matter of fact, your attitude must be infectious, because after having read your little tirade I now feel less favourably toward military in general, and that’s apparently something YOU could never understand.

  7. Articled says:

Very few people in the military condone it or excuse it. Most are upset by it just like everyone else. The Marine in question is under investigation – and he will be prosecuted as warranted.

The difference is that most people can distinguish between the act of an individual and the military as a whole. Left-wingers are, of course, going to use it to condemn the whole military. But that is nothing new really.

This incident isn’t a reflection of politics, brain-washing, etc. . . it was the act of one bad guy (meanwhile thousands of others are taking care stray dogs in a combat zone in Iraq). End of story.

  8. blaster says:

i see it like this. yeah what the guy did was stupid and it does shed a bad light on the military but in comparison to the things that have happend to HUMANS . i mean seriously this kid probably did something that he thought was funny and obviously he was sadly mistaken and people want him in prison for it. . if that isnt a case of the punishment not fitting the crime i dont know what is. i think everybody should just leave it up to the military to handle and believe me they will, rather than tryin him in the court of public opinion.

and just a side note. . there are people from PETA saying that it looks as if the dog is already dead

  9. James M says:

Ok, we are so beating this topic to death.
With all that is happening in the world today, you guys are mobilizing over a puppy in iraq. Have you been to iraq? Have you seen the thousands of dogs wandering homeless while the iraqis do not care? Shouldnt you be more upset with them and lack of caring and feeding of these animals?
Also, in memphis, they find 6 bodies, 2 of which are children under 12. In florida, a gunman kills 2 and himself in a wendy’s. How many school shootings have there been? Two teenagers mercilessly torture a helpless female for 6 hours before hitting her in head with a bat, but here we are, ready to toss this guy off a bridge for an effing dog.
Way to go America. Im almost sick of my own people. Thanks.

  10. Eric S says:

First, I would wait and see if that really happened, the video is being investigated by the Marines and time will tell.
Second, the people who think that people get brainwashed have watched the “Manchurian Candiate” way to many times! If anything, Army training has slacked in it’s hardness, the Navy boot is a joke and the only weaker than Navy boot is the Air Force Boot. Also, are these things common? No, the dogs we had were treated like royalty, we spoiled the things, they loved us and hated the locals because dogs are considered “dirty” in Islam the locals treated them like crap for the most part. I have seen people shoot feral dogs, but the choice was that or be revealed or get bitten, but any strays that were good were treated great and the only thing that sucked was that alot of the brass, usually flag and above wanted them removed and the other thing was that is almost impossible to get them home with you.
This is my last comment on this topic, it is overdone and no one knows if it is even real yet, so just wait on it please, thanks.

    James M- Nice Point!!

One person makes many in the military look bad, but we cannot judge everyone on one idiot.

  12. mikerr83 says:

Not to ingnore your question but I had to make a comment on someone elses comment. Not all soldiers are coming home and beating their wives! The few you hear about do not make up the entire military just like these few guys with the puppy incident. It is insulting as a military wife to have our community consantly scrutinized like this. The military family has a closer bond than anyone outside the system will ever understand. My husband has been deployed several times now and I promise you he is more sane thanmany civilians out there. I am sick and tired of our soldiers living under a microscope.

  13. Michael P says:

It’s time to move beyond the fake video of the fake marine throwing a fake puppy.

We go through a lot of mental conditioning to do horrible things. This is not one of those things.

Soldiers are human beings with the same attitudes towards the small and helpless as everybody else. We are not walking talking killing machines. We are human beings with a very hard job.

  14. Jaileen says:

I think what he did is wrong, but his command will take care of it.
(if the video was real of course)
The military is like any other organization, you have good apples and bad apples, and one man’s actions cannot be used to judge the rest, that would be such an ignorant thing to do.
Yes, I agree with what was done is wrong. . . but I don’t agree with all this attention people are giving to this matter when we have men throwing their children off bridges! Yes this just happened not too long ago and I didn’t see this much attention granted to it.

The Military takes out their own trash.
    99. 99% of the people in the Military ( and their families)are first class people. But, like any other organization or society, there are people who get in who—well, you get the idea.
I have faith in the Uniform Code of Military Justice. . rest assured, those who are involved, will feel the fury of Military Justice.
