Why do so many conservatives wear Birkenstock sandals? Is it so they can recognize each other?

   No no no….. I agree with Enzyme…. many conservatives do. I think I have it figured out.

   I have a friend I went to college with. Today he is an extremely successful lawyer with his own firm. He is as conservative as they come. It’s like if you took a checklist of conservative traits and asked him to mark off those that applied to him….. well every box would be darkened in.

   But, the man loves his Birks. When not working on the weekends…… he’s living in his Birks. It can be winter…… and he’s still wearing his sandals. Psychologically I think they make him feel….. free. Ok I know that sounds all ooshy gushie get-intuned-with-your-mind cheesey. But I really think that is it. Honestly….. it started out differently. He’s so into style and fashion and what is cool and what is not. So since Birks were so in, oh he just had to have a pair to be up on the latest. (Which is why I believe most conservatives wear them to be honest…… but that answer was too simple lol). But my friend has had this one pair for YEARS and the cork was so worn down and yet he still would NOT get rid of them. He actually had them recorked!! It’s like they have become a symbol of peace and non stress and relaxation. I swear they have become his best friend. Being rather liberal myself, I give him a very hard time saying, “You do realize that Birks will be the downfall of the Republican party. Look at what they do to you when you wear them. This could be bigger than Watergate. Birkengate!” He just rolls his eyes and tosses me a peace sign. See? he’s already on his way.

   The really hip conservatives now wear Keens. Great for fly fishing, golfing and rock climbing.

   Conservatives like them because it is just so easy to kick off the Birkenstocks before inserting the foot in the mouth.
